Principles and Practices of Aikido
Exploring pathways to self-mastery
This lively workshop introduces basic elements of Aikido, the martial art oriented toward conflict resolution. It then applies these tools to help increase self-mastery: the inner clarity and power found in grounding into somatic wholeness. This workshop has a larger ambition also: Helping people become more response-able to the chaos in today’s world.
The session is open to individuals with or without a background in Aikido. The focus will not be on advancing technical skills, but on how Aikido can guide our way to a deeper presence and fuller capacity as humans and change agents.
A variety of experiential tools, including movement, breathing, posture, and energy expression, will help increase your somatic awareness and reorient you toward your fullest capacities. It will be active, interesting, provocative, and fun!
You can expect:
• Movement exercises to help you become centered and powerful in your body
• Awareness activities to open up a fuller sense of your potential
• Perspective-sharing to better understand our inner processes
• Breathing and energy practices to attune to how energy shapes our actions
While this is not a rigorously physical experience, it does involve physical movement and interaction. Please come with an open mind! Be ready for an active session, and please communicate with us in advance about any physical needs or limitations that may affect your participation.
Preregistration is required, but there is no upfront cost to participate. At the close of the session, donations will be encouraged (estimated value $80) but no contribution is required. Participants should wear clean, comfortable clothing and be prepared to be active. A water bottle, journal and pen, sit cushion, and sweater (it may get chilly) are also good to bring. A light snack will be provided at a break.
